My Thoughts

 Tuva Moodyson proves to be as complicated and layered a character as she has appeared in previous novels. If anything, you get to see more of her hidden demons and how she tries to cope with them. The environment is as unsettling and as hostile as ever and in this story, Tuva's patch as a journalist has extended to include the threatening small-town of Visberg. With her deafness, Tuva experiences the world around her differently to the hearing world and sometimes this emphasises her vulnerability and makes you concentrate on the sensory clues, in silences or voices in the distance. 

    Bad Apples can be read as a standalone but of course, I would recommend you catching up with Tuva in her other novels. At the beginning of my advanced treader copy, Will Dean warns the reader to 'buckle up' and my goodness, it was good advice. The pace of the story increases towards its shocking end and the situation which Tuva finds herself in is completely horrific! 

In short: an arresting plot, atmospheric setting, multi-layered heroine and an ending to make you gasp! 

About the Author

 

Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands and lived in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. His debut novel, Dark Pines, was selected for Zoe Ball’s Book Club, shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker prize and named a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. The second Tuva Moodyson thriller, Red Snow, won ‘Best Independent Voice’ at the Amazon Publishing Readers’ Awards, 2019, and was longlisted for the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2020. The third novel, Black River, has been longlisted for the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2021. Rights for the series have been sold in eight territories (France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic, China and Turkey). 

Will lives in Sweden where the Tuva Moodyson novels are set. TV Rights to Dark Pines have been optioned by Lionsgate, the producers of Mad Men, with plans for a multi-part series featuring Tuva Moodyson.
