Dreams Come True at the Wartime Hotel by Maisie Thomas #Review

Manchester, 1943. I am delighted to feature another in the WW2 saga by Maisie Thomas. Dreams Come True at the Wartime Hotel  was published on March 29th by Boldwood Books .    Kitty’s new venture, hosting wedding receptions at Dunbar’s Hotel, has got off to a flying start, and she’s looking to the future. But will her spendthrift husband Bill agree to a divorce – and to letting her keep the business? Antarctica. A mining base at the edge of the world.

Anders Nordvelt, last-minute replacement as head of security, has no time to integrate himself into the crew before an act of sabotage threatens the project. He must untangle a complex web of relationships from his position as prime suspect.

Then a body is found in the ice. Systems fail as the long night falls. Now Anders must do more than find a murderer: he must find a way to survive.

Will anyone endure the night shift, or will ice and frozen corpses be all that remains?

My Thoughts

It took me a while to acclimatise myself to who was who and where we were in the story but once I had sorted out who I thought everyone was, I really settled into the novel. Of course, that is when the author started to spring his surprises and I began to realise that I wasn't sure who could be trusted and what was going to happen next. The writer brilliantly wrong- foots the reader and it is only at the end that you realise that the perpetrator has been hiding in plain sight.

The setting and environment are intrinsic to the story and I loved the way the characters were all trapped together by the climate. Just as in an Agatha Christie crime novel, the suspects are all gathered together, apart from the rest of the world. In this case, they are all isolated at the foot of the world for the longest period of darkness, the Night Shift. I found the writer's style of writing to be fluid and easy to read, never quite knowing where he was going to take me.

In short: Crime meets science fiction- I loved it!
