Best Mistake Ever by Christy McKellen

This is a new to me author but I am delighted to feature on the celebrations for the latest novel by Christy McKellen , Best Mistake Ever . It was published by Boldwood on 16th January. Some mistakes are worth making Beatrice Donovan would do anything for her identical twin sister. Including stepping into her hotel management job temporarily and pretending to be her - she’s desperate. What could go wrong? A lot apparently! Because her sister Delilah has hugely understated her role – the hotel is at risk of closure and she’s promised she can turn it around. Now Bea has to find a way to fly under the radar, get the job done before anyone notices their switch up. Sounds easy, all Bea has to do is avoid her temporary new boss Jonah. However, that’s a lot harder than she thought. Not only does he have impossibly high standards, he’s also out of this world gorgeous, an ex-rockstar with a chip on his shoulder and he's watching her like a hawk! So Bea uses her charm to keep him fo...

One crossed wire, three dead bodies and six bottles of bleach

Seth Beauman can’t sleep. He stays up late, calling strangers from his phonebook, hoping to make a connection, while his wife, Maeve, sleeps upstairs. A crossed wire finds a suicidal Hadley Serf on the phone to Seth, thinking she is talking to The Samaritans. But a seemingly harmless, late-night hobby turns into something more for Seth and for Hadley, and soon their late-night talks are turning into day-time meet-ups. And then this dysfunctional love story turns into something altogether darker, when Seth brings Hadley home… And someone is watching… Dark, sexy, dangerous and wildly readable, Good Samaritans marks the scorching return of one of crime fiction’s most exceptional voices.

My Thoughts

This is one of those twisty dark novels which you almost read through outstretched fingers. The characters are beyond devious and it has to take the prize for being the most unnerving book I have read this year! It is an extremely well plotted story which is told through the shifting perceptions of Seth, Maeve and Ant. You also get to hear the thoughts of one of the victims, right up to the bitter end.

For the first half of the novel, you are not sure quite how the story is going to develop. Then, with a jolt, you really begin to understand just what is going on. It is truly shocking. What is more, there are more surprises to come and I certainly did not foretell the ending. Although it has a deviant feel about it, there are moments of sheer black comedy and Maeve's logic is a real highpoint.  With sex and violence in spades, this will really appeal to those who like their thrillers to be dark, dark, dark!

In short: A dark and devious thriller with some unforgettable characters.
