I’d never heard of Sark when a random internet search came up with a picture of this charming cove in the English Channel. White sailboats floated on cerulean blue sea surrounded by pretty green hills and pink wildflowers. I lost myself for a couple of hours, reading about this island, their unusual laws, their dark sky full of stars and their complex history. It just took hold on my imagination. Later that same day, I remember posting the picture to my Facebook page with the caption “One day ...

The Sherlock Holmes Children's Collection: Shadows, Secrets & Stolen Treasure 10 Books Box Set (Series 1) #SirArthurConanDoyle

Today on the blog I have a Children's Collection of readers which will appeal to 7 - 9 year olds. The Sherlock Holmes Collection is a box set of 10 books which have been adapted for this age group and which look like a great way to introduce them to this classic author.

Each book in the set includes a QR code for the free audio.  This ten-book set includes A Study In Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Blue Carbuncle, The Speckled Band, The Naval Treaty, The Sussex Vampire, The Red Headed League and The Three Student

About Sherlock Holmes:  a fictional character created by the author Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes made his debut impression in Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet in 1887. He would chase and seek criminals tirelessly during the Victorian and Edwardian London, in Europe and southern England. Since its creation, Holmes has remained one of the most profound and recognizable characters in the detective world and genre.

My Thoughts

This is an appealing set from the moment you pick up the boxset! All the paperbacks are colourfully illustrated on the covers with a totally up to the minute design. The illustrations throughout the book add to the story with certain key clues highlighted. I liked the slightly idiosyncratic expressions on the faces of the characters shown and the variety of how text is presented. Not only is it there in the main body of the book but also in the form of letters, examination papers, written notes, even newspaper stories and posters.

With simplified language and occasional dialogue, young readers will enjoy looking for the clues and solving the mysteries, I am sure. These will be totally appropriate for encouraging some reading stamina and those who love a series will also really enjoy them.

About the Author

Arthur Conan Doyle born in 22 May 1859, trained as a doctor, worked as a surgeon and also a medical officer. However when his writer career began, he focussed on many stories and one of which was Sherlock Holmes, the series became an instant success in England since its appearance published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual. Despite the success of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur wanted to end the series by killing off the character in hopes that he could prioritise other writing ideas he had at the time. However the public and fans who were die-hard followers of his work at the time made a massive commotion which pressured Arthur to revive Sherlock Holmes. Conan also wrote many other titles such as The Lost World' and several other non-fiction books.
