Then She Vanishes by Claire Douglas #Review

I am delighted to feature Claire Douglas' latest thriller, Then She Vanishes on the blog today. It was published as an ebook on 27th June and will be released as a paperback on August 8th.

THEN SHE VANISHES is a twisty new thriller about love, loyalty, and what happens when long-buried secrets are violently wrenched into the light, from the three-time Sunday Times bestselling author of DO NOT DISTURB, LOCAL GIRL MISSING, and LAST SEEN ALIVE.

Twenty years ago, Heather and Jess were best friends – until one hot, fateful summer, when the fair came to town and Heather’s sister Flora went missing. Now, Heather is lying in a coma, after shooting two strangers and then herself. Jess, a journalist with a rocky history, is sent to uncover the truth, but soon discovers that the traumatic events of their youth had consequences more far-reaching than she could ever have imagined.

My Thoughts

Tense and twisty, this thriller keeps you on the edge right until the very last sentence. Don't ever think that you have worked it out- you'll find that the plot has taken another turn in the road. Jess is a character with real depth. There is much more to her than meets the eye. She has guilt hidden deep below the surface and there are very few people, if any, who know the real her. Nevertheless, she is a character who you have sympathy for and she has courage and grit as well as a much more vulnerable side.

Jess' family background could not be more different than Heather's and Jess found in Heather's family, the family she wanted for herself. However, we find out that its family members are not open books and have secrets hidden of their own- in fact, layer upon layer of them. It is a great suspenseful read which will keep you hooked to the end. You question ideas around friendship and family and how far loyalty should stretch.

In short: Tense and thrilling-just remember to breathe.
