Happily Ever After by Jane Lovering #Review

I am delighted to feature Jane Lovering's Happily Ever After  which was published by Boldwood Books on February 17th.   Andi Glover loves nothing more than a good book. Any book in fact because when you’re raised by unconventional parents who think school’s for squares, alongside a deeply conventional sister who escapes home as soon as she can, fiction is eminently preferable to reality. The only problem is that fiction isn’t the best way to learn about the real world. When Andi starts her new live-in job at Templewood Hall for the eccentric Lady Dawe and her enigmatic son Hugo, it’s tempting to think she’s fallen into the pages of one of her favourite gothic novels. But the plot twists at Templewood Hall are stranger than fiction and it’s not long before Andi questions if she’s living in a romance novel or a whodunnit. Bumps in the night, a missing heir, ghostly apparitions and secrets that have been kept for generations - the mysteries mount up. Then there...

Is a change as good as a rest?

When married couple Fern and Aiden have a windfall, their reactions could not be more different. While Fern is content to pay off their mortgage and build a nest egg before starting a family, her husband is set on traveling the world.

Fern’s not much of a back-packer so, before she knows it, the idea of a ‘marriage gap year’ takes shape. And, as Aiden heads off to the wilds of Australia, Fern chooses the more restful Provence for her year out.

Set amidst the glorious French scenery, Château de Vernon offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and Fern agrees to help out in return for painting lessons from the owner – renowned, but rather troubled, painter Nico.

As their year unfolds in very different ways, will the time apart transform their marriage, or will it drive Fern and Aiden even further apart…

Let Lucy Coleman whisk you off on a heart-warming, sun-drenched and magical French adventure.

My Thoughts

In Summer in Provence, we have an interesting situation where Fern and Aiden decide to have a year apart and reluctantly, Fern travels to Provence to rediscover her creative side. What she finds when she gets there are some lifelong friends and a community which accepts her from the start. She has some issues from a family tragedy to come to terms with which go some way to explaining why she has felt so protective of her family.

You do not meet Aiden very much for most of the book. He is a fleeting character who you glimpse as he rushes through text messages and short telephone calls to Fern. However, he is a major part of Fern's life and she has some difficult decisions to make. The setting of the book is absolutely beautiful and a major source of inspiration to Fern. With an interesting mix of characters and some character development, this does not disappoint.

In short: Travel to Provence for an uplifting tale.
