Deep Dark Night by Steph Broadribb #Review #Giveaway

I am delighted to be on the Orenda blog tour for Steph Broadribb's 4th Lori Anderson novel, Deep Dark Night. I thoroughly enjoyed the first three and you can read my reviews here: Deep Down Dead  |  Deep Blue Trouble  |  Deep Dirty Truth
I also have a great Giveaway with the chance to win a print copy of Deep Dark Night. Details on how to enter are at the foot of this post.

The fourth book in the award-winning Lori Anderson series, Deep Dark Night sees daring bounty hunter and single mother Lori Anderson journey from Florida to Chicago to take down a notorious crime family. Published to coincide with International Women’s Month, it will see the full series rebranded a fresh, contemporary new look.

Working off the books for FBI Special Agent Alex Monroe, Florida bounty hunter Lori Anderson and her partner, JT, head to Chicago. Their mission: to entrap the head of the Cabressa crime family. The bait: a priceless chess set that Cabressa is determined to add to his collection.

An exclusive high-stakes poker game is arranged in the penthouse suite of one of the city’s tallest buildings, with Lori holding the cards in an agreed arrangement to hand over the pieces, one by one. But, as night falls and the game plays out, stakes rise and tempers flare.

When a power failure plunges the city into darkness, the building goes into lockdown. But this isn’t an ordinary blackout, and the men around the poker table aren’t all who they say they are. Hostages are taken, old scores resurface and the players start to die.

And that’s just the beginning...

My Thoughts

Tense, tense, tense - that just about sums up this thriller for me. It starts down in a dark cellar and the feeling of being enclosed, locked- in, runs through the book. In contrast to the three earlier books in the Lori Anderson series, this one does not range all around the country. It stays pretty much where it started and Lori finds herself hemmed in, imprisoned in various locations. When she reaches the fresh air, it is to find there is a blackout and anarchy erupting. The settings reflect her inner turmoil as she feels trapped by Monroe's hold over her and JT.

Lori Anderson is as brave and sassy as ever. You can't help but like her. The action alternates between Lori (in the first person) and JT (in the third). The plotting is seamless and so assured. There is no clumsiness, it is like a well-oiled machine! It is a machine which gets faster and faster as the plot continues and the pace never lets up. Wherever will Book 5 take her? I can't wait to find out!

In short: Character, action, atmosphere, tension- it has it all!
