I am thrilled to be taking part in the Publication Day celebrations for My (Not-So ) Perfect Summer by Phoebe MacLeod. It is published today on May 7th by Boldwood Books .   Autumn’s summer is off to a smashing start… sort of. Earlier this year, Autumn’s life looked great: she had a great relationship with her brilliant teenage daughter Chloe and from September she was all set to be Deputy Head at the London school where she works. And with a pay rise on the cards, she was excited for her and her long-term boyfriend Marc to buy their first home. But Autumn’s barely opened the estate agent's website when Marc vanishes with half their savings, leaving her no choice but to move into grandma’s rural home in Kent. And things go from bad to worse when Autumn is involved in an accident during the move, leaving the village’s dashing new baker Jake in plaster cast, and making her a local outcast before she’s even unpacked her bags. On Christmas Eve 2023, an shocking discovery rocks Eve Quinn’s world. The only gift Eve wants this year is the truth. But will it take a Christmas miracle to unravel generations of secrets?

Unwrap this festive tale of complicated families, impossible choices, and an unforgettable love that lasts three lifetimes.

 My Thoughts

This story takes place over one day , Christmas Eve and weaves together the lives of three generations: Cathy, her daughter Helena and granddaughter, Eve. They have a complicated dynamic as Cathy has largely been the mother figure to Eve. The reasons for this emerge as the story unfolds. This is a warm and uplifting story with family at its very centre. In fact, family ties are the motivating force behind the plot and tell you so much about the characters.

The three women are quite different personalities. Set in three different decades, 1968, 1993 and 2023, the plot lines are woven together and some surprising links emerge. Christmas is the backdrop to all three stories and whilst it can be described as festive, it is by no means the dominant factor. This makes it a good choice as an early Christmas read.

In short: a warm, uplifting story of family with a touch of romance.
