Death Deserved by Jorn Lier Horst & Thomas Enger #Review #Giveaway

I am delighted to be taking part in this fantastic Orenda Blog Tour to celebrate the publication of Death Deserved by Jorn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger. This is the first in the international bestselling, award-winning Blix & Ramm series and this nordic noir is translated by Anne Bruce. I also have a great giveaway for you with the chance to win a copy of the book. Details on how to enter are at the foot of this post.

Oslo, 2018. Former long-distance runner Sonja NordstrĆøm never shows at the launch of her controversial autobiography, Always Number One. When celebrity blogger Emma Ramm visits NordstrĆømā€™s home later that day, she finds the door unlocked and signs of a struggle inside. A bib with the number ā€˜oneā€™ has been pinned to the TV.

Police officer Alexander Blix is appointed to head up the missingpersons investigation, but he still bears the emotional scars of a hostage situation nineteen years earlier, when he killed the father of a five-year-old girl. Traces of NordstrĆøm soon show up at different locations, but the appearance of the clues appear to be carefully calculated ā€¦ evidence of a bigger picture that heā€™s just not seeingā€¦

Blix and Ramm soon join forces, determined to find and stop a merciless killer with a flair for the dramatic, and thirst for attention.

Trouble is, heā€™s just got his first taste of itā€¦

                                                                                     My Thoughts

This is such a satisfying crime thriller with a strong structure and  plotting which is spectacular and which leaves you in awe. |It is a real masterclass. Add to that, some great characters who have their own backstories and you realise you are in for a treat. There is a balance between the police investigation and the journalism which brings conflict and moves the narrative along at a superb pace.

Tenacious policing and the ability to think laterally makes the investigation credible. The references to so-called celebrities gives the story a current feel and connects it to today. The most surprising character for me, turned out to be Emma Ramm, who had her own demons and you see her develop as the novel progresses. There are connections between characters which are gradually revealed and which throw light on events which have moulded them. The novel begins with breathtaking tension which you return to at the end. Clever writing and the chance to solve a tangled mystery makes for a fabulous read. Special mention for Anne Bruce whose translation flows beautifully.

In short: first class crime writing
