A Christmas Gift by Sue Moorcroft #Review

Welcome to the celebrations for Sue Moorcroft's festive novel. A Christmas Gift was published by Avon on 6th November.

Can the happiest time of year heal the most broken of hearts?

Georgine loves Christmas. The festive season always brings the little village of Middledip to life. But since her ex-boyfriend walked out, leaving her with crippling debts, Georgine’s struggled to make ends meet.

To keep her mind off her worries, she throws herself into organising the Christmas show at the local school. And when handsome Joe Blackthorn becomes her assistant, Georgine’s grateful for the help. But there’s something about Joe she can’t quite put her finger on. Could there be more to him than meets the eye?

Georgine’s past is going to catch up with her in ways she never expected. But can the help of friends old and new make this a Christmas to remember after all?

 My Thoughts

This festive novel was a real pleasure to read. I loved the characterisation and the back stories of the main characters who slowly revealed themselves to have hidden depths. Francine has underestimated what she is capable of. At the beginning of the story, she is struggling to keep her head above water thanks to her ex-boyfriend who has left her with some sizeable debts. Francine is desperate to hold onto the security she has carved out for herself but the arrival of her sister means she has to share with her the situation sher is in.

When Francine meets Joe, she is in for a shock as slowly she realises how events from the past are coming to the fore. Joe is not as he seems on first meeting but working together on the Arts school performance draws them closer. I enjoyed the contrast between Francine and Joe's life trajectories There is plenty of scope for a wide variety of characters with the pupils and staff involved in the performance, who bring out aspects of both Joe and Francine's characters. Middledip is a delightful village and provides the warm and cozy setting that makes for an uplifting read.

In short: past secrets and future chances
