After Darcy by Joanna Nadin #Review

Any lover of Pride and Prejudice will not be able to resist Joanna Nadin's latest novel. After Darcy was published by Bedford Square Publishers on 26th March. It is a truism, frequently invoked by the members of the Meryton Women's Guild, that one is only ever as happy as one's unhappiest child. So, with five daughters and four grandchildren, it was a miracle Mrs Hester Bennet ever raised a smile. At best, she was only ever tentatively pleased, and even then understood that her contentment rested on the edge of a gaping precipice into which she would inevitably tumble the second Kitty or Lydia (it was almost always those two) messaged in the clutches of yet another existential crisis… Lydia, home from Paris on New Year's Day in a welter of hangover and humiliation, finds herself swearing off drink, drugs and sex for the next 12 months. Through her unfamiliar sobriety, she'll see a landmark year for all the Bennet sisters, including a disruptive 40th...

The Do-Over by Phoebe MacLeod #Review #PublicationDay

I am delighted to be taking part in the Publication Day celebrations for The Do-Over by Phoebe MacLeod. It is published today on November 28th by Boldwood Books.

Thea Rogers has dedicated her life to her career in corporate law. Apart from her colleague and long-time friend-with-benefits Alasdair, she’s forgone friendships and relationships, and now she’s on track to become her firm’s youngest ever female partner. She should be ecstatic. But when a senior partner dies unexpectedly, Thea realises the people at his funeral are only there out of duty. Suddenly, Thea can’t shake the question: if she disappeared tomorrow, would anyone care?

As the life choices she's made suddenly make less and less sense, Thea is forced to make a decision. Stick with the original plan or take a completely different path.

Thea has a chance to do it right this time, and fill her world with the things that matter. But can people really change? And once life starts looking up, why does it feel like there’s something… or someone she can’t seem to replace?

 My Thoughts

Thea seems to have everything sorted from the start, as a top corporate lawyer. You find out pretty quickly why she has felt so driven to succeed all her life and why she shuns relationships. When an unexpected event happens, she reflects on her life choices and decides to go on a completely different path. This shock her family. She seems to have to rethink how to conduct relationships with  family and friends. A favourite character fo me has to be her PA back in the office who sees all too clearly what can go wrong and how to avoid pitfalls.

Thea finds out who really matters to her and with some, she is truly shocked to find out. There are moments of humour both through the events and in the dialogue and car parking wars, in particular, really made me smile. The story goes at a good pace and introduces some surprising characters, settings and situations. This is an enjoyable read with much to smile at and romance found in surprising places.

In short: new starts
