The Battle of the Bookshops by Poppy Alexander #Review

The Battle of the Bookshops by Poppy Alexander was published by Avon Books on September 25th.  A charming literary-themed novel about a young woman determined to save her great-aunt’s beloved bookshop from extinction by the shiny new competition—which also happens to be run by the handsome son of her family’s rivals. The cute, seaside town of Portneath has been the home of Capelthorne’s Books for nearly a hundred years… The shop, in the heart of a high street that stretches crookedly down the hill from the castle to the sea, may be a tad run-down these days, but to Jules Capelthorne, the wonky, dusty world of literary treasures is full of precious childhood memories. When her great-aunt Florence gets too frail to run it alone, Jules ditches her junior publishing job in London and comes home to make the bookshop’s hundredth birthday a celebration to remember. Jules quickly discovers things are worse than she ever imagined: The bookshop is close to bankruptcy, ...

Mistletoe Magic in the Highlands by Bella Osborne #Review #PublicationDay

Today we have a festive romcom by Bella Osborne Mistletoe Magic in the Highlands  is published by Aria today on October 10th.

Olivia Bingham has bad luck with men.

She’s been ghosted more times than she can count, but this Christmas she’s finally met someone really special online: Fraser Douglas, a Scottish chef working at an idyllic hotel in the Highlands. He’s sweet and sensitive, thoughtful and funny – not to mention incredibly good looking.

Just when she thinks things couldn’t be going any better, Fraser’s dating profile vanishes, and Olivia fears the worst. Frustrated and wounded, Olivia decides she’s going to drive all the way out to Loch Lochy Hotel and confront Fraser.

But when she arrives, things don't go exactly as she hoped. Worse still, Fraser doesn’t seem to have any idea who she is....

My Thoughts

Olivia's impulsive decision to travel up to the Highlands in search of Fraser, who has ghosted her, has far-reaching consequences for her. The family she meets at his hotel are all larger than life characters who all add to the humour and keep the story going at a cracking pace. You get quite a vivid picture of the rather rundown hotel, but it does feel like a home for everybody, including the animals. In the midst of the , at times, chaos, you have Fraser trying to impose fine dining cuisine methods in an attempt to keep the hotel going.

As the snow closes in, Olivia finds herself stuck in the hotel but quickly forms friendships. The romance, with its grumpy/ sunshine angle is a gentle slow burn. This is a heartwarming story with lots of funny scenes and dialogue to match. It seems just right for a wintery weekend.

In short: love and humour in the Highlands

About the Author

Bella Osborne has been jotting down stories as far back as she can remember but decided that 2013 would be the year that she finished a full length novel. In 2016, her debut novel, It Started At Sunset Cottage, was shortlisted for the Contemporary Romantic Novel of the Year and RNA Joan Hessayon New Writers Award. Bella's stories are about friendship, love and coping with what life throws at you. She likes to find the humour in the darker moments of life and weaves these into her stories. Bella believes that writing your own story really is the best fun ever, closely followed by talking, eating chocolate, drinking fizz and planning holidays. She lives in the Midlands, UK with her lovely husband and wonderful daughter, who thankfully, both accept her as she is (with mad morning hair and a penchant for skipping).
