My Thoughts
I found this to be extremely readable and it sped by. There is a lovely light tone to the narrative which is cultivated through the witty dialogue that peppers the story and the quirky characters who you meet. As the first in the series, it does a good job of setting the scene and establishing why Penny chooses to come back to help to run her grandmother’s shop.
Penny’s attempts to make a profit are at odds at time with Izzy’s philosophy of life . I enjoyed it most when they joined forces to satisfy the stream of children on the lookout for cheap costumes for World Book Day. As cozy crime, there is almost a nostalgic atmosphere and the sense that the community is enclosed and on the edge of the mainstream. There are plenty of clues to consider and the reader can try to decipher the truth behind the suspicious deaths. There is a hint of romance to come and plenty of potential for future stories.
