Introduction to scene:
Freedom is a choice…
In this scene, Flora is battling with the idea of who she should be, and what others expect her to be.
Flora allowed herself a night with Raffaele to explore all
the desires she never would allow herself to feel in the broad strokes of the
sun, and when that moment was over, she ran. Back to the safety of routine and
hid herself beneath her duty to others and their expectations of her. But here
he is, back in her life, and reminding her that freedom *can* be a choice, if
she allows herself to drop the heavy load on her back, one brick at a time.
And the conflict in this little snippet, has never been greater between who Flora wants to be, and what the people around her expect her to be…
Extract:
‘Do not run from me again.’
It was a command, but a pleading note punctuated it.
Flora couldn’t do anything but plant her feet to the ground. The danger was standing right in front of her, touching her, but she couldn’t shrug off his hold on her body because his fingers on her jean-clad hip weren’t what was holding her in place. It was the intensity in his eyes.
‘I didn’t run the first time,’ she lied, because she couldn’t confess the truth. ‘I walked straight out through the front door of the hotel.’
He pulled his hand away. ‘Without saying goodbye?’
Shame gripped her. Quietly, she’d slipped from his room and gone back to her own. She’d collected the folder containing the redacted version of her life and then she’d run all the way home. From bus to train. City to country. From field to farm. Ready to fall back into line. Obey the rules. Forget everything she’d learnt in London.
She’d locked her time in London away...justified her reckless actions as being just one night. One slip from grace.
She wouldn’t slip again.
‘Why would I say goodbye when we didn’t say hello?’
‘We shared—’
‘A night. A moment,’ she interrupted. ‘And you’re not following the rules.’
‘Rules?’
‘Of one-night stands.’
He raised a dark brow sardonically. ‘You’d know because you’ve had so many?’
She clamped down on her bottom lip. He was scribbling outside the lines on purpose. While she was trying to stay within them with painstaking determination.
But it clawed through her. The realisation that she wanted to break the rules, too. She wanted to stem the itch on her palm by placing it on his cheek, to see how smooth his skin was without the stubble he’d had all those weeks ago. She wanted to run her fingers along his jaw, to stare into his eyes and demand he kiss her. Everywhere. She didn’t want to be this woman who lived to make others happy. She wanted to be free.
One more time…
