The Magic of Provence by Alison Roberts #Review #A YearInFranceBook3
We are returning to Provence for the third in Alison Robert's trilogy centred on the Gilchrist sisters. The Magic of Provence was published by Boldwood Books on July 5th. You can read my review of the second in the series, From Provence with Love, here.
Sometimes facing your fears can be the start of something wonderful
Fiona Gilchrist has spent years running from her demons. But deciding to take back control, she packs up her life and makes the trip to Provence to be reunited with her sisters. And almost instantly, there is something about La Maisonette which is healing and Fi knows she’s ready for a chance to start again.
When an opportunity arises to work alongside vet Christophe Brabant, Fi, although hesitant cannot resist saying yes. Because immersing herself in what she loves is the ultimate distraction. And while Christophe may be utterly charming, he’s also committed to his job so Fi knows she’s in safe hands. Yet, what starts as a blossoming friendship quickly turns to something deeper. Because for the first time in her life, Fi begins to feel relaxed and completely at ease. Could it be that Christophe’s heart is more like hers than she realises? Or has she allowed him to penetrate the boundaries she always considered unbreachable?
Coming to France took a leap of faith, but in doing so it has allowed these two damaged souls a chance to find each other while Provence works its magic…
My Thoughts
It was a delight to return to this series. The three Gilchrist sisters are all strong but distinct individuals but share a strong family bond. At the beginning, Fiona is a troubled soul and she runs to a place she can escape to, the cottage the sisters inherited in Provence. Her family have never been told the reason she has shut herself away from them but can see that she is in need of some love and support. They close ranks around her. Events in the past weigh heavily and they have all been affected as young girls by the disappearance of their father. They share bad memories although their reactions their situation have be different.
You get to uncover many family secrets along with Fiona. Provence as a setting seems to have a real magic about it and Fiona recognises it as a place she can recoup and heal. There is a romance bubbling below the surface although Fiona tries to deny it at first. Christophe is drawn to her but he too has reservations about risking his feelings. They both need to find the courage to take a leap of faith. With strongly drawn characters, a range of lively people around them, a gorgeous setting and secrets to be discovered, this is a satisfying read, full of light and hope.
In short: new beginnings
