Charlie's Last Angel by Maggie Christensen #Review

I am delighted to feature the latest novel by Maggie Christensen whose novel, Charlie's Last Angel was published by Cala Publishing on Jume 9th.  Some years ago I was asked to ask Maggie some questions about her writing and you can read her answers  here .  In her early fifties, Harri Caldwell has always prided herself on being a strong, independent woman. Content with her single life, she loves her role as headmistress at the prestigious Lilian Cooper College for Young Ladies in Brisbane.  High profile barrister Charles Kaye has lived a charmed city life. With an amicable divorce behind him and three grown daughters, he is often featured in gossip columns alongside beautiful young women, a revolving cast his daughters nickname Charlie’s Angels. When Charles and Harri meet at an art gallery opening, the instant connection is undeniable and, much to the chagrin of Charles’ daughters, a relationship quickly ensues. Their romance attracts media attention,...

Summer Escapes on the Scottish Isle by Lilac Mills #Review #PublicationDay #CoorieCastleCraftsBook2

We are returning to the Isle of Skye for the next in the Coorie Castle Crafts series from Lilac Mills. Summer Escapes on the Scottish Isle is published today by  Canelo on July 17th.

Will she give everything up for love?

Freya Sinclair has it all. An exciting life in London, a successful career as a ceramicist and a handsome boyfriend. But when she receives a call that her elderly father is in hospital, she drops everything to support his recovery in Skye.

Back on the island, Freya finds a new lease on life – Coorie Castle’s craft centre is firing her creativity and she’s glad to be back with her dad again. Being so close to her schoolgirl crush, Mackenzie Burns, is an added bonus. The two share an instant connection and Freya misses her old life less and less.

But Freya has a boyfriend at home and now a dazzling job offer in New York. She must figure out what she truly wants, before anyone gets hurt.

A heartwarming, feel-good cosy romance perfect for fans of Sarah Morgan, Julie Shackman and Sue Moorcroft.

My Thoughts

Having enjoyed the first in this series, I was delighted to read the next  and to catch up with the community on the Isle of Skye. This story is centred around Freya who was brought up on the island but who left as a student, eager to put space between herself and the island. Her mother died and Freya just wanted to escape the memories. She has become a successful and critically acclaimed ceramics specialist and professor in London, using the colours and environment of the Isle of Skye as her inspiration.

Summoned back to the island after her father has broken his hip, Freya finds herself stuck there for the summer. Her feelings of guilt at leaving her father come to the surface and she tries to be the best daughter she can,  despite him trying to cold shoulder her. As time goes on, Freya begins to question her relationship with Hadrian who is back in London and finds a growing connection with a local man, Mackenzie who she knew when she was young.  Freya finds herself torn between her desire to create beautiful pottery and her home responsibilities. Her father is a far from easy patient and Freya finds herself torn between her worries about him and a once in a lifetime career opportunity. As she slows down, Freya is able to appreciate all the local community has to offer. The local environment gives her such inspiration and offers a gorgeous backdrop to the story.

In short: new beginnings

About the Author

Lilac Mills lives on a Welsh hillside with her very patient husband and incredibly sweet dog, where she grows veggies (if the slugs don't get them), bakes (badly) and loves making things out of glitter and glue (a mess, usually).

She's been an avid reader ever since she got her hands on a copy of Noddy Goes to Toytown when she was five, and she once tried to read everything in her local library starting with A and working her way through the alphabet.

She loves long hot summer days in the garden, and cold winter ones snuggled in front of the fire, but whatever the weather she's usually writing, or thinking about writing, with heartwarming romance and happy-ever-afters always on her mind.
