Coming Home to Maple Lodge by Alison Sherlock #Review

I am delighted to feature the first in Alison Sherlock's new series set in the Corswolds. Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge was published by Boldwood Books on June 20th. A family and hotel in desperate need of help… Maple Tree Lodge has been the home of the Jackson family for over a century. But the hotel has never been a success and, following the sudden loss of his father, architect Ben Jackson soon discovers the hotel is close to financial ruin. Ben has to make some tough decisions if the hotel is to survive and his family are to keep a roof over their heads. With the hotel in urgent need of a renovation, Ben’s sister calls on the talents of her best friend, interior designer Lily Watson. Cash strapped Lily needs a successful project to prove to herself and her high-achieving parents that she can carve a successful career and Maple Tree Lodge sounds like just the place for Lily to showcase her talents. However, Lily’s vision for a cosy, country Cotswolds hotel is the com...

Cutting it Neat for the Wedding by Margaret Amatt #Review #GlenbriarSeriesBook9

We are back in beautiful Scotland for Margaret Amatt's ninth in her Glenbriar  Series, Cutting it Neat for the Wedding. This latest novel was published on 31st July by Leannan Press.

You can read my review of the first, Stolen Kisses at the Loch View Hotel here and the second, Just Friends at Thistle Lodge here and the third, Pitching up at Heather Glen here, the fourth, Two's Compamy at the Forest Lights Show here, the fifth, Highland Fling on the Whisky Trail here and the sixth Snowdown at the Old Schoolhouse here  and Starting Over at the Crafty Bee Barn here and A Surprise Proposal in the Rose Garden here.

Is the best man also Mr Wright?

Perpetually single Hayley McBride – hairdresser and hopeless romantic – is delighted when her brother asks her to help plan his wedding. Until that is, she’s forced to work with her brother’s best friend, Oliver Wright - a cold and aloof divorce lawyer and a man who's always hated her.

Oliver has seen enough broken relationships to know love doesn’t last. Being his friend’s best man is just a formality. What is there to do other than ensure his friend’s younger sister, Hayley, doesn’t waste too much money on a one-day event?

But Hayley has a knack for making people smile, and Oliver has struggled for years to resist her. As they work together, he starts to wonder if he’s been living in denial.

Hayley keeps chipping away at his walls, and uncovering a different side to him, but can she risk her heart on such a committed cynic?

They must decide whether to take a chance on love or stick to being nothing more than Bridesmaid McBride and Mr Wright the best man.

My Thoughts

This series continues to grow and romance is very much in the air as wedding preparations are underway. If you have read earlier stories, you will know how Finley and Genevieve got together. It is up to Hayley and Oliver to plan the perfect entertainments before the wedding. They couldn’t be more different on the surface. Hayley is chatty and outgoing, with tons of empathy and a real interest in people. Oliver is closed down emotionally and presents a grumpy persona to the world. There are reasons for his manner which go back to his childhood. What he does know is that there is something missing in his outwardly successful life.

Hayley is happy in Glenbriar and longs to settle down and raise a family there. She loves the familiarity and safety she feels, close to her friends and family. As Oliver gradually opens up, the banter between himself and Hayley adds to the enjoyment. There are plenty of glimpses of familiar characters and although these are standalone stories, you will definitely get more if you read the series in order.

In short: can love find a way?

About the Author

Margaret is a bestselling Scottish author and chocolate lover who has been writing stories for over twenty years (possibly more if you count her primary school efforts). Her early works will never see the light of day and are locked in dusty vaults on some old floppy disks. But after all those years of practise, Margaret released her first novel in 2021. It was the first of a ten-book series set on the gorgeous Scottish Isle of Mull.

Margaret is also the author of the acclaimed Glenbriar Series, based in the fictional Scottish town of Glenbriar. This is an on-going series with more books coming in 2024 and 2025.

The stories are unashamedly romantic but with lots of drama and an eclectic mix of characters. Each

book can be read as a standalone but followers of the series will enjoy catching up with the characters.
