The Castle in the Bay by Margaret Amatt #Review #BarraSeriesBook1

We are travelling to the beautiful island of Barra for Margaret Amatt's new Barra Series, The Castle in the Bay. The first in this new series was published on 12th April by Leannan Press .   What if the castle has the key to mend their broken hearts? After a miserable few years, fun-loving Iona McKenzie tossed her corporate job to the wind, swore off long-term relationships, and escaped to the Hebridean island of Barra to teach water sports. Recently dumped by an ex who labelled him 'boring', Monty MacNeil is having a tough time. When he's tasked with carrying out his late father’s last request to scatter his ashes at Kisimul Castle – the famous castle in the bay – he doesn't expect his trip to Barra to begin by running smack bang into a feisty and gorgeous woman, knocking her off her bike, and almost dropping his father’s urn into the sea. Iona turns out to be the person he needs to take him over to the castle, but Monty soon sees another way she ca...

New Beginnings at Wildflower Lock by Hannah Lynn #Review #TheWildflowerLockSeriesBook1

Today I am delighted to feature the New Beginnings at Wildflower Lock by Hannah Lynn. The first in The Wildlower Lock series was published by Boldwood Books on July 14th.

New starts and hopeful hearts...

At 25, Daisy May’s life is not living up to expectations. Her childhood dreams of being an artist feel as unachievable as a committed relationship or managing to save enough money for a deposit on a house. But a surprise inheritance could change all that.

After Daisy learns she’s now the new owner of a forty-foot narrow boat, she sets out for Wildflower Lock, where the fresh country breeze and the calm water is enough to assure her everything will be okay.

With the help of the ruggedly attractive, yet grumpy riverman, Theo, she begins to work on her new home, the September Rose. Can she breathe new life into the old boat and learn to navigate not only the canals themselves, but also the people who live there? Or will the whole venture pull her under?

 My Thoughts

The first in a new series, this does a great job of setting the scene and introducing a range of characters. Daisy is the centre of the story and you feel throughout that she is looking for somewhere to belong. There are secrets from her past which lead her to reevaluate her childhood and her relationship with her mother. She has never really settled at work and flitted from job to bob with a feeling of disappointment in how her life is panning out.

Family and friendships are at the heart of the story and of Daisy's life. She obviously has talents and has to learn to accept help from her friends. When she meets Theo, she realises she has a lot to learn about Wildflower Lock. He becomes a good friend and together, they set about sorting out her inheritance. I was taken by surprise at the end which felt rather abrupt but I can se how the story is going to develop. Daisy's decision came a little out of left field but there is plenty of potential for more in the series.

In short: starting over
