The Castle in the Bay by Margaret Amatt #Review #BarraSeriesBook1

We are travelling to the beautiful island of Barra for Margaret Amatt's new Barra Series, The Castle in the Bay. The first in this new series was published on 12th April by Leannan Press .   What if the castle has the key to mend their broken hearts? After a miserable few years, fun-loving Iona McKenzie tossed her corporate job to the wind, swore off long-term relationships, and escaped to the Hebridean island of Barra to teach water sports. Recently dumped by an ex who labelled him 'boring', Monty MacNeil is having a tough time. When he's tasked with carrying out his late father’s last request to scatter his ashes at Kisimul Castle – the famous castle in the bay – he doesn't expect his trip to Barra to begin by running smack bang into a feisty and gorgeous woman, knocking her off her bike, and almost dropping his father’s urn into the sea. Iona turns out to be the person he needs to take him over to the castle, but Monty soon sees another way she ca...

Sophie's Summer Kiss by Debbie Viggiano #Review

Today we have a delightful summer romcom by Debbie Viggiano. Sophie's Summer Kiss was published by Unicorn Publishing on June 6th.

Sophie Fairfax knows that you don’t get to fifty without collecting some emotional bruises along the way.  Having left the School of Knocks with top marks, she’s not just older, she’s wiser.

So, when boyfriend George proposes, Sophie says yes.  After all, George is nothing like her charming but unfaithful ex, Teddy. Okay, George is a little boring – his favourite colour is grey – and there’s also the small matter of him suggesting Sophie is too old for a bikini and should buy a one-piece for their honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast, but so what?

When Sophie uploads a pic of her engagement ring to Instagram, she expects attention, but not in the form of Thomas Tabby Cat – a fake account – warning she’s betrothed to a cheater.

Rocked, Sophie suffers flashbacks to life with Teddy. She can’t go through that again. Bestie Sue suggests it’s the work of a jealous troll, but Sophie is rattled.  Is there a love triangle and, if so, might it become a wrecktangle?

Sophie reckons there’s a way to find out. Sometimes, when searching for an enemy, you need to check your list of friends….

 My Thoughts

The setting of the Amalfi coast forms the backdrop for the second half of the story and it makes for a gorgeous Summer read. The community there proves to have a lot in common with Sophie’s English village, with the jungle drums of the gossips relaying the events in her life and everyone interested in what is going on in her life. There are some hilarious episodes in the story. George’s friends are larger than life and leave you open mouthed at their behaviour.

Early on, you make your mind up about George and know what decision you want Sophie to come to about her future. Her first husband, Teddy, is incorrigible but has the measure of George, in common with her friend, Sue. Starting over at fifty takes a leap of faith and you are willing Sophie to take a risk. This is a fun, entertaining read with some larger than life characters and a fast pace.

In short: Italian sunshine all the way

About the Author

Prior to turning her attention to writing, Debbie Viggiano was, for more years than she cares to remember, a legal secretary. She lives with her Italian husband, a rescued pooch from Crete, and a very disgruntled cat. Occasionally her adult children return home bringing her much joy... apart from when they want to raid the fridge or eat her secret stash of chocolate.
