The Little Bookshop by the Sea by Eliza J Scott #Review

I am delighted to be taking part in the celebrations for Eliza J Scott's The Little Bookshop by the Sea.

Welcome to the Happy Hartes Bookshop in Micklewick Bay on the beautiful North Yorkshire Coast!

The Happy Hartes Bookshop has been a part of bookworm Florrie Appletonā€™s life as far back as she can remember. From the evocative smell of the books, to working alongside her beloved Mr H and his black Labrador, Gerty, thereā€™s no wonder she calls it her happy place.

Living in a town she loves, with her family and group of close-knit friends nearby, life is sweet. Until one dreadful Monday morning, when everything is turned upside down and things are changed forever.

Devastated, Florrie finds herself thrown into an unexpected situation with handsome stranger, Ed Harte, owner of a pair of twinkly navy-blue eyes and a smile that has the knack of making mischief with her insides.

Despite being fresh out of a relationship, Florrie quickly finds herself falling for him, but sheā€™s torn, reluctant to give her heart to someone who seems intent on not sticking around.

While her heartā€™s doing battle with her head, Florrie soon finds herself privy to a secret with Ed involving a heart-wrenching twist they could never have imagined.

Will love find a way to bring them together, or are they destined to go their separate ways?

 My Thoughts

This is the first in a new series and it certainly has a lot of potential. The setting is just right for some escapist reading and the author has created a lovely group of lively characters who are all ripe to feature in their own story -or so I Hope! This first story sets the scene and centres around Florrie. She has her vulnerable side and prefers to stay close to her family but you do feel that she is slowly coming out of her shell as the story continues.

A bookshop is always a winner as a setting for a story and the Happy Harte's Bookshop sounds delightful. There is a mystery to unravel which casts certain characters in a different light. I did find Ed rather difficult to work out at first but held onto his grandfather's opinion. Ed's parents are difficult to like- I'm not sure I ever did. With a lovely sense of community and genuine friendship, this is a gentle romance which hits just the right escapist note.

In short: friendship and books- what a combination!
