Talk Bookish to me by Kate Bromley #Review
I am so happy to celebrate the publication of Kate Bromley's debut novel Talk Bookish to Me which was published on 27th May by Zaffre.
Inspiration can be found in the most unlikely - and inconvenient – places…
Kara Sullivan is definitely not avoiding her deadline. After all, it's the week of her best friend's wedding and she's the maid of honour, so she's got lots of responsibilities. She's a bestselling romance novelist with seven novels under her belt, so she's a pro. Looming deadlines don't scare her, and neither does writer's block, which she most certainly does not have. She's just eager to support Cristina as she ties the knot. Right? Right.
But then who should show up at the rehearsal dinner but Kara's college ex-boyfriend, Ryan? Turns out he's one of the groom's childhood friends, and he's in the wedding party, too. Considering neither Kara nor Ryan were prepared to see each other ever again, it's decidedly a meet-NOT-cute. However, when Kara sits down to write again the next day, her writer's block is suddenly gone. Are muses real? And is Kara's muse . . . Ryan?
Praise for Talk Bookish To Me
A fabulous debut; it had me laughing, it had me shouting, it
had me from the get-go. Bromley has a knack for banter, creating a smart, sassy
and sexy read - Kara and Ryan's story is a blast.
- Pernille Hughes, author of Probably the Best Kiss in the World
An engaging romp of a story about what happens when a romance writer uses her novel's checkpoints to win back her first love and her life becomes stranger and better than fiction.
- Shelley Noble, New York Times bestselling author of Imagine Summer
TALK BOOKISH TO ME is a sexy, funny, and emotional second-chance love story with a killer premise: romance author Kara is fighting a wicked case of writer's block and the only cure is hooking up with her ex Ryan. Kate Bromley's writing is as sharp as it is heartfelt. Add this book to your TBR list immediately!
- Sarah Smith, author of Faker and Simmer Down
My Thoughts
This is a lively debut novel which keeps you engaged throughout the story. The central character, Kara is so likeable. Sometimes impulsive, she nevertheless proves to be a loyal friend. There is plenty of humour throughout, especially in the pre- wedding preparation scenes and Kara's writer's eye provides some amusing detail. Of course, where humour is concerned, it is Duke, the rescue dog, who steals the show every time!
My favourite part of the book has to be the relationship between Kara and Ryan and their banter which fizzes off the page. There is a lot of history between them and once they meet up again (at a pre-wedding function, where else?) they find themselves thrown together once more. Throughout, Kara, now a successful historical romance writer, is struggling for inspiration and fighting off thoughts of her looming deadlines. I loved this bookish side to the story and the excerpts she shares with you from her latest draft are a reflection often of where Kara and Ryan are heading- or sometimes where she would like them to be. Can Kara find love second time around or will there be someone else? Read it and find out!
In short: A pacy and amusing romcom with characters who stand out from the page.
About the Author
Kate Bromley lives in New York City with her husband, son, and her somewhat excessive collection of romance novels (it's not hoarding if it's books, right?). She was a preschool teacher for seven years and is now focusing full-time on combining her two great passions - writing swoon-worthy love stories and making people laugh. Talk Bookish to Me is her first novel.
