The Soprano's Daring Duke by Susanne Dunlap #Review

Susanne Dunlap's Regency novel, The Soprano's Daring Duke is her second double dilemma story. You can read my review of the first here:  The Dressmaker's Secret Earl A princess with a scandalous secret. A duke desperate for a wealthy bride. A debutante torn between duty and passion. Newly widowed Princess Adelheid Kinsky thought she was free—until she learns of her abusive late husband’s final betrayal. The son she believed dead, the illegitimate child of a forbidden love, still lives. To secure his future, she must marry within a month—without revealing the truth. Her best prospect? The Duke of Hartland, a notorious rake drowning in debt. Meanwhile, Hartland sets his sights on Olivia Fontenoy, an heiress whose fortune could solve all his problems. A Perfect Devon Pub by Debbie Morrison #Review #BrambletonSeries

A Perfect Devon Farmhouse by Debbie Morrison was published by Prosperina Press  on June 18th. 2025.

Can a village pub serve up a second chance at love?

Fiona is a brilliant maitre d’ and wine-waiter, who has worked with dashing celebrity chef Reuben for years. Now they’ve fallen in love. But when he proposes, in a flash of self-doubt, she realizes she can’t go through with it.

Driven by a mixture of courage and confusion, she flees London for Brambleton - a picturesque seaside village that promises a fresh start.

Soon Fiona has a new job at the lively local pub, pouring her heart into every glass and banishing thoughts of Reuben by studying every night to become a qualified sommelier. But just when she’s started to rediscover what she wants, a new chef turns up at the pub, and throws Fiona’s careful plans into disarray…

With warmth, humour, and a touch of heartache, A Perfect Devon Pub is a gorgeous story that celebrates the joy of good food, fine wine, and close friends – and reminds us that the path to true love often begins with finding the love within ourselves.

My Thoughts

This escapist read has a complicated character at its heart. Fiona is driven by her ambition to attain the rank of Sommelier in her profession. You get the impression that she is desperate to prove herself, especially to her rather distant parents and has become so wrapped up in her desire for success that she has lost sight of what is important in her personal life. Escaping to Brambleton, a quiet Devon village means she has left behind her city life and the talented chef who she has lived with for several years, feeling he has put his ambition before her own.

Fiona's new life in the village pub introduces her to some interesting characters, some new to her, but others, very well known indeed. Fiona takes a long time to come to terms with her life and to re-evalute things. She has to realise that not all her perceptions may have been accurate and to see others in a slightly different light. Her first impressions are certainly sometimes off the mark. This is an uplifting summer read with plenty of character development and a large dose of romance.

In short: new starts and fresh beginnings

About the Author

Welcome! I’m Debbie – thanks so much for stopping by.

I live in the beautiful North Devon countryside, with my husband, a handful of spirited terriers, and a flock of ever-curious chickens. This stunning landscape, with its rolling hills and breathtaking coastline, often finds its way into my stories.

I like to give my readers an escape to places brimming with atmosphere – whether it’s a grand, historic country house, a chic Chelsea townhouse, or a sun-drenched villa draped in bougainvillea with cicadas humming in the warm evening air.

At the heart of my writing are stories of love – whether it’s the comforting warmth of family bonds or the thrill of romantic entanglements, often wrapped in a little bit of family drama to keep things interesting!

When I’m not writing, you can usually find me out in the garden, ( I mostly write in a Polytunnel where I grow my veg! ) exploring the countryside with my dogs, or trying out new recipes in the kitchen. I also love to sneak in a game of tennis or a round of bridge when I can.

I hope you’ll find a story here that whisks you away to a world of romance, laughter, and the beauty of everyday life. Happy reading!
