My Thoughts
Set outside Bath in the country, James Brotherton is free to live as he wants without the restrictions of the Ton. However, the characters are always mindful of the conventions that have to be lived by when the season is in full swing. Into his ordered life comes a trio of relatives who he is now responsible for. From James' reactions, you sense early on that he is a decent and considerate man, despite his privilege . Sofia, the eldest of the sisters shows an independent spirit, have been brought up in the country away from society.
One of the interesting aspects of the story is the difference between the expectations of women and men. Women always have to do as the men dictate and there is a complete power inequality between the sexes which seems to determine how happy and successful married life is. This is a lively romance with touches of humour, a mystery to be found and a cast of characters who all have their own stories to tell.
