New Chapters on the French Riviera by Jennifer Bohnet #Review
I am delighted to feature another of Jennifer Bohnet's delightful novels. New Chapters on the French Riviera will be published on April 15th by Boldwood Books.
Can a grieving chef and a group of writers find their own happy endings?
Eight months after his wife Jacqueline died in a tragic car accident, Michelin stared chef and proprietor of Villa Celestia, Guy Lyon’s life has been in freefall. Consumed by grief and plagued by questions as to why she was in a taxi that fateful day, the doors to Villa Celestia have remained closed.
When a good friend, Sandy Thoreau, asks to rent the villa on the French Riviera for a fortnight to hold a women’s writers retreat after being let down, Guy reluctantly agrees.
All the women at the retreat are looking forward to being inspired. Helena and her friend Mandy are writing debut novels, Isobel is editing a cosy crime story, Liz is desperate to kickstart a new book, self-published author Lorraine is looking for advice and Becky, well Becky is a law unto herself.
Over the course of the next fortnight, two of these women will change the course of Guy’s life forever and new chapters - hopefully with happy endings - will begin for all of them.
The perfect tonic and escapist read to the South of France full of warmth and second chances.
My Thoughts
There are plenty of story threads in this novel with each of the participants in the writing retreat coming with their own reasons for attending and their distinct characters. Guy, the owner of the villa has agreed to help out his friends who have been let down by a venue and in doing so takes the first steps to move out of the grief he has felt over the loss of his wife. He is at a crossroads in his life and unsure as to what his next move will be. He is also aware that he maight not like everything he finds out about his wife and why she was in a car the day she died.
It becomes clear that some of the new friends' lives are linked in ways they are unaware of. There are secrets which are uncovered and new friendships and relationships formed. The setting in Antibes is just right for a Summer escapist read as the French Riviera shimmers in the sun.
In short: new beginnings and answers from the past
