The Wartime Book Club by Kate Thompson #Review

The Wartime Book Club is a marvellous historical novel set on Jersey in World War Two. Written by Kate Thompson , it was published by Hodder $ Stoughton on February 13th. Jersey, 1943. Once a warm and neighbourly community, now German soldiers patrol the cobbled streets, imposing a harsh rule on the people of the island. Grace La Mottée, the island's only librarian, is ordered to destroy books which threaten the new regime. Instead, she hides the stories away in secret. Along with her headstrong best friend, postwoman Bea Rose, she wants to fight back. So she forms the wartime book club: a lifeline, offering fearful islanders the joy and escapism of reading. But as the occupation drags on, the women's quiet acts of bravery become more perilous - and more important - than ever before. And, when tensions turn to violence, they are forced to face the true, terrible cost of resistance . . . Based on astonishing real events, The Wartime Book Club is a love letter

Sign of the Times by Susan Buchanan #Review #Giveaway

I am happy to be featuring Susan Buchanan's latest novel, Sign of the Times.I also have a great giveaway for you to enter. Details are at the foot of this post.

Sagittarius – Travel writer Holly heads to Tuscany to research her next book, but when she meets Dario, she knows she’s in trouble. Can she resist temptation? And what do her mixed feelings mean for her future with her fiancé?

Gemini – Player Lucy likes to keep things interesting and has no qualms about being unfaithful to her long-term boyfriend. A cardiology conference to Switzerland changes Lucy, perhaps forever. Has she met her match, and is this feeling love?

Holly is the one who links the twelve signs. Are you ready to meet them all?

A tale of love, family, friendship and the lengths we go to in pursuit of our dreams.

 My Thoughts

You have to keep your wits about you in this book as Susan has woven twelve characters; stories, one for each star sign, into the story. At the centre is Holly who is a travel writer and who has decided to visit Tuscany for research into her next book. As the story develops, you begin to see the links between the characters whose characteristics are all linked to their particular star sign.

I enjoyed the sections which featured Holly the best and seemed to be able to relate the easiest to her character. Family and friendships run as threads through the different characters' sections. There are secrets and indiscretions, in fact, you feel that all life is here! The timeline can be difficult to follow at times. This is a varied read which will take you away from yourself for a weekend.

In short: Which star sign are you?

About the Author

Susan Buchanan lives in Scotland with her husband, their two young children and a crazy Labrador called Benji. She has been reading since the age of four and had to get an adult library pass early as she had read the entire children’s section by the age of ten.

Susan writes contemporary fiction, often set in Scotland, usually featuring travel, food or Christmas. When not working, writing, or caring for her two delightful cherubs, Susan loves reading (obviously), the theatre, quiz shows and eating out – not necessarily in that order!
