Oslo, New Year’s Eve. The annual firework celebration is rocked by an explosion and the city is put on terrorist alert.

Police officer Alexander Blix and blogger Emma Ramm are on the scene, and when a severely injured survivor is pulled from the icy harbour, she is identified as the mother of two-year-old Patricia Semplass, who was kidnapped on her way home from kindergarten ten years earlier ... and never found.

Blix and Ramm join forces to investigate the unsolved case, as public interest heightens, the terror threat is raised, and it becomes clear that Patricia’s disappearance is not all that it seems...

The second in the hard-boiled and furiously compelling Blix & Ramm series, created by Thomas Enger and Jørn Lier Horst, two of the biggest names in Nordic Noir.

‘Alongside Jo Nesbo’s Knife, Smoke Screen is this summer’s most anticipated read, and it doesn’t disappoint’ Tvedestrandsposten, Norway

‘An exercise in literary tag-teaming from two of Norway’s biggest crime writers with a bold new take ... a series with potential’ Sunday Times, on Death Deserved

My Thoughts

The second in this series does not disappoint. Once again, the balance between police investigation and journalism is well done, with each strand complementing the other. The story certainly starts with an attention- grabbing event and the story skilfully leads you through, with a heart stopping twist near the end. I remember from Death Deserved how brilliantly the story was plotted and you certainly feel that you are in good hands here.

The relationship between Blix and Ramm is totally believable. Connected through events in the past, Blix feels like a father figure toward the young woman and you certainly have the feeling that the past still impinges on the present. You get to see that all the characters have been affected by what happened in their past and in some ways been waiting for the truth to emerge. Only one character seems to be unaware of past secrets. Of course, not everyone is sympathetic but all seem credible. This is a great read, written with great skill and highly recommended. Special mention must also be made for the translator, Megan Turney.

In short:  A cold case uncovered.
