Meet the Author- Emma Eggleston

Today I am delighted to welcome author, Emma Eggleston to Books, Life and Everything to talk about her writing life and her  magical realism YA novel, Escape.

Welcome to Books, Life and Everything, Emma.  Would you like to start by telling us a little about yourself and how you started as a writer?

My name’s Emma Eggleston and I’m the author of a young adult, magical realism novel titled, Escape. I’ve been writing stories since I was a little girl.

If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

If I didn’t write, I think I would want to be an English teacher.

What are you interests apart from writing?

I love to listen to music and play tunes on my guitar.

What is your favorite childhood book?

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is my favorite childhood book.

What are your writing routines and where do you do most of your writing?

I like to write in cozy and quiet places such as my bed or the library. Before writing, I make sure to have some snacks and plenty of water, so that my brain’s fueled up and ready to go.

How do you select the names of your characters? Are they based on anyone you know?

I try not to name my characters after anyone I know because I don’t know how they’ll feel about it. I pick names that are easy to read, short and sound pretty to me.

Do you believe in writer’s block? What do you do to break its spell?

I think writer’s block only happens for me when I try to write about something that I’m not equipped to write about or if I’m not sure how I want the language to sound. It can be hard to dictate the story I have in my head, but I usually have plenty of ideas for my characters and the plot. If I’m really struggling to feel creative, but I want or need to write I’ll write down one of my dreams and sometimes that turns into a story or an idea.

Do you have any unfinished or unpublished books hidden away?

Of course! I think most writers do. Some things I just write for myself and I don’t want to share with the world. Other things I’ve decided aren’t the best representation of my ability and so I don’t want them out in the world. Then, there are the projects that I’m just waiting for the time and inspiration to finish.

Thanks for telling us about your latest novel and your writing, Emma and good luck!
