Arden by G D Harper #Review

We start 2025 by visiting the sixteenth century and meeting two remarkable people from the time, one of whom happens to be William Shakespeare. Arden by G D Harper was published on October 1st by Ginger Cat .   The astonishing untold story of Shakespeare's first play Alice Arden, idealistic and wealthy beauty, burnt at the stake for killing her husband, the former mayor of Faversham in Kent. But was she really the one responsible for the most scandalous murder of the sixteenth century? William Shakespeare, Englandā€™s greatest playwright, born thirteen years after Aliceā€™s execution. Why does his first-ever play, written about this murder, not bear his name? This is a story of two people ā€“ one reviled, one revered ā€“ whose fates become linked in a tale of corruption, collusion and conspiracy. Based on historical documents and recently published academic research, Arden unveils shocking new evidence about the murder of Thomas Arden and reveals, for the first time...

The Day We Met by Roxie Cooper #Review

I am thrilled to be on the blog tour to celebrate the release of Roxie Cooper's emotional read, The Day We Met

You meet your fate on the road you take to avoid it.

Ten years, two people and one twisty, epic love story that asks what happens when you meet your soulmate after youā€™re already engaged to someone else

The Day We Met is an epic will-they-wonā€™t-they love story with a twist. A timely exploration of modern society and complex, emotional relationships, this is beautiful, bold storytelling about characters that will stay with every single reader . . .

Stephanie and Jamie are meant to be. The problem is theyā€™re both with other people.

When Stephanie and Jamie meet one fateful weekend in 2006, it sparks a tumultuous relationship which spans over a decade. The day they meet changes everything . . .

My Thoughts

The Day We Met arrived with a packet of tissues. I thought then that maybe it was going to be an emotional read. My inkling turned out to be correct, and how! The novel follows Stephanie and Jamie from their initial meeting on an art course, through the following ten years. aware of the powerful connection between them, they continue with their existing serious relationships. Meeting once per year, they struggle with their feelings, whilst all the while their other partners evolve and change.

The breadth of the timespan means that you get to find out in detail most of Stephanie and Jamie's innermost thoughts. As the perspective alternates between them, you realise that although they are both cheating on their marriages, they manage to retain your sympathy and you are even rooting for them. You realise that this is a story which is written in grayscale, rather than black and white. Stephanie in particular has quite a backstory and through her therapy sessions, you get to find out so much about her family relationships and what attracts her to certain people.

The ending of the story comes as quite a shock. (Enough said). Looking back, the clues are there but of course, your attention has been diverted elsewhere. There are some meaty themes to fire your enthusiasm: Does fate exist or not? Should you take a risk or stay safe? Can you follow your dreams if it means trampling on other people's?  Can you love two people at once? Set against a playlist of relevant songs, this is a book to tug at the heart strings and tie them up with a bow.

In short: Romance with an edge.

About the Author

Roxie Cooper lives in Yarm, a pretty little market town in the North-East. After reading Classics at Newcastle University, she realised she needed a break from studying Latin, Ancient Greek and all that serious stuff, so naturally, she became a dancer in a nightclub (Ć  la Coyote Ugly) for a few years before going to live in Australia. When she returned, she swapped dancing on a bar, to practising at the Bar, and became a barrister for 7 years.
