Sometimes life just takes the biscuit …
Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she
talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that.
Though she sacrificed her career to help raise her sisters, a job interview at
biscuit company Crumbs could finally be her chance to shine. That’s until she
hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby
nephew, and trips over her handbag.
Managing director Douglas Faulkner isn’t sure what to make
of Abby Spencer with her Bambi eyes, tousled hair and ability to say more in
the half-hour interview than he manages in a day. All he knows is she’s a
breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate
world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her.
But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks
he is.
My Thoughts
I wasn't too sure about the early chapters when I started reading Oh Crumbs but once I had got into the story, I realised that the early background was necessary to show you what Abby's life has been like before she joined the Crumbs biscuit factory. Abby Spencer is such a likeable character who wears her heart on her sleeve. On the surface, people may dismiss her but she shows that she has great strength of character, a quick mind and huge common sense.
Abby's chaotic family are also a delight. Warm and funny, all her sisters are individuals in their own right. As their big sister/ stand-in Mum, Abby has always put her family first, to her own detriment. They are quite a contrast to Doug's much colder upbringing and you see that both their childhoods have formed them into the adults they have become. I find Kathryn's style of writing enjoyable to read and it carried me along. You don't always see the best side of her characters but their actions and thoughts remain true to themselves and therefore the story feels credible.
In short: Full of life and romance, a super read.

With two teenage boys and a husband who asks every
Valentine’s Day whether he has to buy a card (yes, he does), any romance is all

isn't always about hearts and flowers - and heroes come in many disguises.
