Coming Home to Maple Lodge by Alison Sherlock #Review

I am delighted to feature the first in Alison Sherlock's new series set in the Corswolds. Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge was published by Boldwood Books on June 20th. A family and hotel in desperate need of help… Maple Tree Lodge has been the home of the Jackson family for over a century. But the hotel has never been a success and, following the sudden loss of his father, architect Ben Jackson soon discovers the hotel is close to financial ruin. Ben has to make some tough decisions if the hotel is to survive and his family are to keep a roof over their heads. With the hotel in urgent need of a renovation, Ben’s sister calls on the talents of her best friend, interior designer Lily Watson. Cash strapped Lily needs a successful project to prove to herself and her high-achieving parents that she can carve a successful career and Maple Tree Lodge sounds like just the place for Lily to showcase her talents. Fairytale of New York by Zoe Folbigg, #Review #PublicationDay

I am thrilled to be on the tour for the publication day of the latest novel by Zoe Folbigg, Fairytale of New York. It is published today on August 28th by Boldwood Books

Thirty-two year old Charlie Brown has a plane to catch.

As Christmas approaches, she is New York bound, to be reunited with boyfriend Harry after work has kept them apart.

But once she lands, Harry is nowhere to be found…

There’s no hand-drawn sign with her name being brandished at the gate. No answer from Harry's phone. And all at once, Charlie’s worst fears come true.

What has happened to Harry? And what should Charlie do now that she’s an ocean away from home?

As Charlie slowly comes to terms with her predicament, she makes a decision. She’s not leaving New York without finding out the truth, and with a little help from her handsome new friend Pete, there might still be a path to happily-ever-after…

Bestseller Zoë Folbigg returns with a page-turning story of love, friendship and learning to believe in your own worth. Perfect for fans of Mike Gayle, JoJo Moyes and David Nicholls.

 My Thoughts

Charlie and Pete’s story has a symmetry about it as you discover that they both have experiences in common. As their friendship grows, it seems that they both help each other to come to terms with their past. You feel that there is an element of fate in their meetings. Told mostly through Charlie’s eyes, you also get to hear Pete’s thoughts at key moments. Both of them have misunderstandings which put their relationship at risk but you hope that they will see through those.
The story is filled with cultural references and music plays a part in letting us know the state of affairs at times. Charlie and Pete’s family are both a reflection of them and show how grounded they both are despite their professional success. Both characters need to come to terms with traumatic experiences and you do wonder at times if they will be able to move on. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, principally because of the characters who felt so believable and likeable. New York and London provide great settings and add colour to the story.

In short: can love conquer all?
