Meet the Author- Dennis Scheel

Today I am delighted to be featuring the author Dennis Scheel who has written two books in his Underworlds series: No Way Back and Taken with a Dark Desire.

Welcome to Books, Life and Everything, Dennis! Would you like to start by telling us a little about yourself and how you started as a writer?

I always had stories filled in my head, just took a long time before I could get them on paper. I tried many times to get them down on paper, never worked. After ‘my incident’ (I had a case of low blood sugar that caused me to be mute and paralyzed on all right side.) After I recovered I tried to write again, this time in a foreign language, which was English. It worked, I got 107.000 on first draft. I needed extra work so got an editor who taught me a lot.

What are you interests apart from writing?

I love everything that revolves stories, whether it is movies, tv series, books or even games. They all have a different way of telling, yet so fascinating.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones.

Tell us three surprising things about yourself.

My Underworld novels were all made at first when I was 8 years old in my head. (Changed some over the years.)

I was born blind on right eye.

I found inspiration to Claus from Underworlds novels from Loki of Norse Mythology, who is in third one himself too.

Tell us about your latest book without giving the plot away.

Latest is third in The Underworld series and idea is the sins of the parent passing on.

How difficult was writing your second book- did having one published change how you went about it?

I used a lot of what I learnt from first. This time I had Grammarly too, which aided a lot!

How do you select the names of your characters? Are they based on anyone you know?

I do find inspiration on those I know/ have known, but I try to change names to make them unique.

How long on average does it take you to write your first draft?

Six months.

Are there any secret references hidden in your books?

Yes. Most about stuff that I know will have affect later.

Do you have any guilty pleasures which stop/ help you write?

Friend and games, yes. As for help, you can find inspiration the weirdest places.

Do you believe in writer’s block? What do you do to break its spell?

Yes. What usually works for me is editing former chapters or taking a break.

Can you give any hints about any upcoming books you have planned?

After third I may write something else. I have an old story I’m thinking would fit; ‘Mars Warriors.

Do you have any unfinished or unpublished books hidden away?

No, they all in my head.

Good luck with Book 3, Dennis and thanks for stopping by today!
