Coming Home to Maple Lodge by Alison Sherlock #Review

I am delighted to feature the first in Alison Sherlock's new series set in the Corswolds. Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge was published by Boldwood Books on June 20th. A family and hotel in desperate need of help… Maple Tree Lodge has been the home of the Jackson family for over a century. But the hotel has never been a success and, following the sudden loss of his father, architect Ben Jackson soon discovers the hotel is close to financial ruin. Ben has to make some tough decisions if the hotel is to survive and his family are to keep a roof over their heads. With the hotel in urgent need of a renovation, Ben’s sister calls on the talents of her best friend, interior designer Lily Watson. Cash strapped Lily needs a successful project to prove to herself and her high-achieving parents that she can carve a successful career and Maple Tree Lodge sounds like just the place for Lily to showcase her talents. The Close by Jane Casey #Review #Book10(Maeve Kerrigan)

Today's book is a tense detective thriller by Jane Casey. The Close is the tenth in her Maeve Kerrigan series and was published by Harper Collins on 2nd March.

At first glance, Jellicoe Close seems to be a perfect suburban street – well-kept houses with pristine lawns, neighbours chatting over garden fences, children playing together.

But there are dark secrets behind the neat front doors, hidden dangers that include a ruthless criminal who will stop at nothing.

It’s up to DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent to uncover the truth. Posing as a couple, they move into the Close, blurring the lines between professional and personal as never before.

And while Maeve and Josh try to gather the evidence they need, they have no idea of the danger they face – because someone in Jellicoe Close has murder on their mind.

 My Thoughts

This time thriller is a real pageturner, one that kept me hooked late into the night. In addition to the different story threads, I loved the friendship between Maeve and Derwent, both professionally and personally. Their dialogue is spot on and gives credibility to the story.

This felt like a closed room type of crime story, except that the suspects were all living on the same cul de sac, rather than in the same building. It was a great device as the characters interacted and all the red herrings were able to be laid out. Other investigations were threaded through the story and made you see all the abilities of the detectives. Maeve is a great character at the centre. Determined and yet vulnerable, there are many facets to her character. Tension is built up throughout the book, only broken at times by flashes of humour found in the dialogue or through the little dog, Pippin. Highly recommended

In short: suspense makes for a great read with a hint of romance

About the Author

Jane Casey has written twelve crime novels for adults and three for teenagers. Married to a criminal barrister, she’s got the inside track on some of the country’s most dangerous offenders, giving her writing an unsettlingly realistic feel.

This authenticity has made her novels international bestsellers and critical successes. They have been nominated for several awards and in 2015 Jane won both the Mary Higgins Clark Award and Irish Crime Novel of the Year for The Stranger You Know and After the Fire, respectively. In 2019, Cruel Acts was chosen as Irish Crime Novel of the Year at the Irish Book Awards. It was a Sunday Times bestseller.

Born in Dublin, Jane now lives in southwest London with her family.
