Coming Home to Maple Lodge by Alison Sherlock #Review

I am delighted to feature the first in Alison Sherlock's new series set in the Corswolds. Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge was published by Boldwood Books on June 20th. A family and hotel in desperate need of help… Maple Tree Lodge has been the home of the Jackson family for over a century. But the hotel has never been a success and, following the sudden loss of his father, architect Ben Jackson soon discovers the hotel is close to financial ruin. Ben has to make some tough decisions if the hotel is to survive and his family are to keep a roof over their heads. With the hotel in urgent need of a renovation, Ben’s sister calls on the talents of her best friend, interior designer Lily Watson. Cash strapped Lily needs a successful project to prove to herself and her high-achieving parents that she can carve a successful career and Maple Tree Lodge sounds like just the place for Lily to showcase her talents. Christmas by the Coast by Mandy Baggot #Review

We are off the the Hamptons for a festive novel today. Christmas by the Coast by Mandy Baggot was published in paperback on October 14th by Aria. It is also available in e-book format.

This Christmas, find out if love letters from the past can pave the way to a brand-new future ...

After a terrible heartbreak, Harriet Cookson worked hard to build her life back up. Now she has a dependable boyfriend, a great job and a decent flatshare. But when her beloved grandmother passes away, Harriet drops everything to fly out to the Hamptons tocomfort her grieving grandpa.

Christmas is coming and as she arrives on the sandy beaches of her childhood in Montauk, Long Island, Harriet spots someone she never expected to see again –her ‘one that got away’, ex-soldier Mack Wyatt. Now, Mack is determined to win Harriet back and show her that the life she’s been living might be the wrong happily-ever-after.

My Thoughts

This festive read is certainly one to curl up with. Its central characters are vividly drawn with a shared, interesting backstory and the surrounding cast adds colour and life to the story. I enjoyed the setting in The Hamptons which added a different twist to the Christmas festivities, as led by Harriet's grandmother, you see them recreated. Both Harriet and Mack have an air of vulnerability and you get to see the story through both their eyes.

Another interesting dynamic in the story is Harriet's relationship with Iain, who at the beginning is both her partner and business partner. The reasons for this become clear as the story develops but suffice it to say, that she has to reappraise what she wants from life. Full of warmth and humour, the story manages to tread a path through some darker subjects and show you that life is a hopeful place.

In short: Starting over, second chances.
