Coming Home to Maple Lodge by Alison Sherlock #Review

I am delighted to feature the first in Alison Sherlock's new series set in the Corswolds. Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge was published by Boldwood Books on June 20th. A family and hotel in desperate need of help… Maple Tree Lodge has been the home of the Jackson family for over a century. But the hotel has never been a success and, following the sudden loss of his father, architect Ben Jackson soon discovers the hotel is close to financial ruin. Ben has to make some tough decisions if the hotel is to survive and his family are to keep a roof over their heads. With the hotel in urgent need of a renovation, Ben’s sister calls on the talents of her best friend, interior designer Lily Watson. Cash strapped Lily needs a successful project to prove to herself and her high-achieving parents that she can carve a successful career and Maple Tree Lodge sounds like just the place for Lily to showcase her talents. However, Lily’s vision for a cosy, country Cotswolds hotel is the com...

Brooklyn Monroe Wants It All by Karen Booth #Review #NeverTooLateBook2

Today we have the second in Karen Booth's series, Never Too Late, entitled Brooklyn Monroe Wants It All.

She can’t hit the snooze on her biological clock forever…

Love, career, kids—Brooklyn Monroe wants it all. Her beauty company? A triumph. Her love life? Total fail. At 42, that makes motherhood her top priority. With no man in her life, she’s prepared to fly solo, but her plan is derailed when a mailing list mishap turns Brooklyn into a someone-get-me-pregnant internet meme. Making her PR nightmare go away entails a soul-baring interview on national TV. And the guy asking the questions? Her all-too sexy ex.

Talk show host Alec Trakas is the king of bad timing. Case in point, his heartbreaking romance with Brooklyn. Alec was all about commitment but Brooklyn was launching her start-up, and forever wasn’t in the cards. Now a shot at his ultimate dream job depends on convincing Brooklyn to spill the secrets leading to her viral celebrity. It sets Alec’s star rising, but puts Brooklyn in a sea of flirty men. Fate has thrown them back together. Sparks are flying. But is the timing finally right? Because having it all might not be worth the risk of losing each other again.

 My Thoughts

This is a fun read which features a likeable and lively central character, Brooklyn who has reached that age when her biological clock has rung and she realises that time is running out if she wants to be a mother. Of course, although she has been used to getting her own way in her successful business, this turns out to be a bit more problematical.

Much of this story is about bad timing and how certain opportunities come up at the most inconvenient time. Both Alec and Brook have to decide where their priorities lie and to re-evaluate their friendship. I enjoyed the secondary characters, such as Brook's family and Alec's colleagues at the TV company where what you see is not necessarily what you get. Brook's business is rooted in the beauty business and it is often difficult to know who can be trusted. Although written as part of a series, this can be easily read as a standalone. It has humour and romance, a really entertaining read.

In short: Is it too late for a second chance?
