What Now? by Shari Low #Review

 

In October 2020, I took part in the celebrations for the 20th Anniversary of Shari Low's What if? You can read my review here.  

Of course, I could not help, therefore, to jump at the chance to review its sequel, What Now? It will be published on January 28th.

Twenty years ago, Carly Cooper went on an epic quest to track down all the men she’d ever loved and lost in the hope that one of them was her Mr Right.

Now, two decades and two teenage sons later, she thinks she might have got it all wrong.

As the years have passed, lots of things have changed, leaving Carly asking ‘What Now?’

With a divorce and an empty nest on the horizon, Carly sets off once more to Los Angeles with her band of trusty girlfriends, to find the carefree, wild and adventurous Carly Cooper that she used to be.

On this latest quest, Carly discovers a few home truths and has to decide If her marriage is worth saving or is there a new happy-ever-after out there, just waiting for her…


 My Thoughts

This is a lively read and I loved Carly's wit and banter which she reserved for her two sons. Family and friends are centre stage throughout. If you have read What if? you will remember Carly as she was as a 30 year old looking for love. Now, you come forward 20 years and find out how her life has moved on and what happened to her group of friends. When you first meet her, she is 50 and feeling the empty nest syndrome. However, you find out that there is more to her sadness than meets the eye.

    In What Now? Carly continues her travels and casts her perceptive eye over life in LA. The cast of characters are colourful and full of life. You also get to see the downside of social media and to witness Carly in all her protective glory as one of her extended group is threatened. The two men in her life, Sam and her ex-husband, Mark, are a good contrast. One micro- manages and the other seems to live and let live. You are left thinking, as Carly did, is it possible to change? 

in short: A sparkling romcom, full of character.
