Coming Home to Maple Lodge by Alison Sherlock #Review

I am delighted to feature the first in Alison Sherlock's new series set in the Corswolds. Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge was published by Boldwood Books on June 20th. A family and hotel in desperate need of help… Maple Tree Lodge has been the home of the Jackson family for over a century. But the hotel has never been a success and, following the sudden loss of his father, architect Ben Jackson soon discovers the hotel is close to financial ruin. Ben has to make some tough decisions if the hotel is to survive and his family are to keep a roof over their heads. With the hotel in urgent need of a renovation, Ben’s sister calls on the talents of her best friend, interior designer Lily Watson. Cash strapped Lily needs a successful project to prove to herself and her high-achieving parents that she can carve a successful career and Maple Tree Lodge sounds like just the place for Lily to showcase her talents. Tangled Vines by Megan Mayfair ** Blog Tour Review**

Today's contemporary novel by Megan Mayfair, Tangled Vines. Set in Australia, it spans a generation. You can read my review of Megan's first novel, Things We Leave Unsaid, here.

Amelia O'Sullivan is a photographer who has always viewed herself through the wrong lens. When her marriage publicly crashes around her, she flees to the safety of her aunt's country property to pick up the pieces. Can she adjust her focus to what she really wants from her life?

Born into a wealthy and powerful family, Frederick Doyle may seem like a man who has it all, but behind the scenes, a bitter business feud threatens an irrevocable family split. As he fights for control of the winery he'd built from the ground up, he finds a supportive ally in Amelia and becomes increasingly beguiled by her creative spirit.

Jill McMahon is a successful novelist suffering from writer's block over her latest manuscript. Finding her niece, Amelia, at her door, reminds her of the bonds of family, but in seeing Amelia and Frederick's relationship grow, a long-forgotten and painful secret threatens to re-surface.

Can Amelia, Frederick and Jill untangle themselves from their pasts or will history simply repeat itself?

My Thoughts

I found this to be an engrossing read and I quickly became invested in the lives of the Amelia, Frederick and Jill. Of the three, I would say that Jill was my favourite. There was obviously a lot to find out about her past life and I enjoyed her friendships with the others. You feel that she would be excellent company.

Behind the romance which is developing, there are also some interesting threads about mental health, anxiety and depression. Ialso appreciated how the relationships within families and between the generations are explored. There are different strands of the story which are woven together, forming quite a complicated picture. It seems that the characters' lives are interwoven in ways they have not all guessed. Fluently written and with a steady fast moving pace, this makes for a great read.

In short: Tangled lives.
